Charles Arthur was the second child born to Carl and Elizabeth (Harty) Anderson. The story goes that he went by Art, so as to not be confused with his dad's name. He was married to Beatrice Johnson on December 3, 1924, together they had 4 children: Elizabeth "Betty" Elaine, Frances Alvina, Duane Roger, and Byron Leslie. Art and Bea were divorced in July 1952. Art later moved to Pasadena California where he lived for several years, including through the big earthquakes of the early 1970's. He returned to Minnesota in the early 70's after having some serious health issues.

Charles was a prolific reader and a poet. It is said that he had a photographic memory. He could read large books and novels almost as fast as he could turn the pages.
