Julia Ellen Chidester Butler
May 17, 1931 ~ May 23, 2012
Our loving mother, grandmother and sister passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, on May 23, 2012 surrounded by her family.
She was born in Price Utah, and was the youngest daughter of Charles Ray Chidester and Winnie May Heath. She graduated from Carbon High School and went on to attend LDS Business College, where she graduated with a degree as an Executive Secretary. While attending LDS Business College, she met her sweetheart, Roland DeGraw Butler. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on October 7, 1952. Together they raised two daughters, Kathlene and Michele.
Ellen was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many different capacities, including Primary President, Jr. Sunday School and Relief Society teacher, and as secretary for the Young Women organization. She said that her favorite calling was teaching the children in Jr. Sunday School. After they retired, Ellen and Roland served a mission for the LDS church in the Tennessee, Nashville mission from 1983-1984.
She loved her family and enjoyed having them around her. Mom was always willing to sacrifice her time and means to help us in any way she could. She had a warm, compassionate spirit and always knew what to do and say to make those around her feel welcome and comfortable in her home. She loved to write letters and always made an effort to keep in touch with her extended family by sending letters, cards and emails to them on a regular basis.
Ellen enjoyed painting ceramics and doing embroidery, which she would often give away as presents to her family and friends.
She will be remembered for her laughter, kindness, generosity, and unconditional love. She will be missed by all who have known her.
She is survived by her brother John, sister Nina Dahlstrom, daughters, Kathlene Butler and Michele Hoskins, granddaughters Nicole (Levi) Fluehe, Amber (Alexander) Hinton, Brooke (Michal) Slazak, Heather (Mayo) Miller, Tiffany Hoskins and Alicia Hoskins and great-grandchildren Aleks Hinton, Tigerlillie Hinton, Mason Miller and Braden Slazak.
Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved husband who she missed dearly. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Ray, sisters Mae Curtis, Zella Ingram, and Sylvia Hunt.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Rose Park Stake Center, 760 North 1200 West, Salt Lake City, at noon. Friends and family may visit Thursday May 31, 2012 at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the Stake Center prior to the service from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.
