Newton Henshaw was the son of Benjamin Hinshaw (1803-1840) and Mary E. Larrance Hinshaw (1800-1851). In 1852 Newton moved from North Carolina to Indiana. About 1855 moved from Indiana to Hesper, Douglas, Kansas with his brothers Isaaac, Iram and Nathan.

During the Civil War, Newton enlisted as a private in Company E, 12th Kansas Infantry. He mustered-out with his regiment as a Quartermaster Sargent Jun 30, 1865.

Newton married Abigail A. Gregg on Nov 14, 1866 in Baldwin City, Johnson County, Kansas. Children were Cora, Mary or Mamie, and Inez. Abbie remarried in 1925 to George L. Bachman and lived in California.

In 1873, Newton Henshaw was elected to the State of Kansas House of Representatives from Hesper, Douglas County, District 55.

Newton had fruit trees and belonged to horticultural societies. Henshaw-Thomas Bible & "Lawrence Daily Gazette" of July 9, 1894 shows date of death as July 9, 1894 and place as Hesper.
