Obituary: Tilfred Joseph Swenson, 79, Shelly, MN, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000 in Hillsboro (ND) Hospital. He was born Sept. 1, 1920 in rural Shelly (MN) to Emil and Bertha (Efteland) Swenson. He grew up in the Shelly area and attended Cheerful Hut Rural School near his home. As a young man, he worked for Henry Efteland and also operated the Shelly Dray Line with his brother, Selmer.

Tilfred entered the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in July 1942, and was honorably discharged in December 1945. He married Alvina Floberg June 19, 1943 in Fort Worth, TX. He worked on area farms and for several area plumbers upon his return to Shelly. Health concerns forced a change of careers and in 1972 he began working as custodian at teh Schelly School, retiring in 1986 after 13 years.

Tilfred will be remembered for his youthful physical strength, his stories and wit, his gentle nature, the twinkle in his eye and delifghtful presence. He was proud of his country and never said an unkind word to anyone. It could truly be said that Tilfred "never knew a stranger" and most certainly was loved by all who knew him.

Tilfred is survived by his wife, Alvina, Shelly; one son, Tilfred "Fred" Jr., Moorhead, MN; one grandson, Eric Swenson, Raleigh, NC; one brother, Tony (Arlene), Moundsview, MN; five sisters, Anna (Eugene) Morehart, Shelly; Olga (Lester) Gregor, Moorhead; Selma Larson, Hendrum, MN; Alice Brenden, Hillsboro; and Lucella Doerfler,Mahnomen, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Selmer, Alert and Martin; and one sister, Ida DeYoung. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly. Funeral services will be on Friday, April 7, 2000, at 11 AM in the Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 6, 2000 from 5-7 PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, in the Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN. Burial will be in the Shelly Cemetery. Arrangement are entrusted with Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad.
