Harriet Patterson was born May 10, 1835 in Cross Creek Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. When a young woman her father removed to Virginia with a part of the family, and she and her sister Mary were left at the home here to keep house for her brother, Robert M Patterson, who was managing the farm. Later she moved to Virginia, where on January 3, 1867, she married Samuel Edward Brown. After the death of her husband she remained for a number of years in Virginia, a part of the time caring for her motherless granchildren, and later came to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where she died April 4, 1912
