Rachel Reed married Norton Claypoole in 1672 in Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware.

Rachel Claypoole Field

Rachel married Norton Claypoole on July 12, 1670 at St. Alphege Church in Greenwich, England. (On close inspection of the record it was found to fail to list Rachel's maiden name). Births to Norton Claypoole and Rachel are recorded in St. Mary Abchurch in central London starting in 1671. (Norton Claypoole was a vestryman of this church starting in the late 1660's).

Births at St. Mary Abchurch for Norton & Rachel Claypoole were: Mary in 1671(She dies in infancy); John in 1672 (dies young); and James in 1674.

In 1681 Rachel Claypoole with her young son James sail for America aboard the ship Elizabeth & Mary (Elisha Bennett, Master) to join her husband Norton Claypoole in Delaware after a long separation of several years which Norton had spent in Barbados and Delaware. The ship landed at Perth Amboy, New Jersey where Norton Claypoole met them and escorted Rachel and their young son James to Norton's plantation in Delaware.

Children born to Norton Claypoole and Rachel in Delaware were: Mary 1682; Robert 1683, and Jeremiah 1685. After Norton Claypoole's death in 1688, Rachel would marry as her 2nd husband Nehemiah Field on December 6, 1689. (Their child Nehemiah Field Jr. was born on December 20th the same month). A second son William Field would be born in 1693. Rachel Claypoole Field would die a widow at Lewes, Delaware on January 24, 1718. Rachel was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes and may have been buried there but no record survives. (Although to date the absolute provable maiden name of Rachel has yet to be found through extensive genealogical research, I have discovered a candidate that fits many of the criteria including age, location, names of Rachel's children, Rachel's known child bearing years, probable connection to Abchurch before 1670, and information from James Claypoole's letter book). The candidate is Rachel Cooke christened on August 31, 1651 at St. Dunstan Stepney Church, daughter of Robert Cooke, Mariner living in Limehouse and his wife Elizabeth.
