The son of N. Scott, he went to New York City to learn the harness-maker's trade and worked there for six years. He came to Syracuse after that and was a harness manufacturer for fifteen years. He then began traveling for Salt Spring Company until his death.

In March 1842 he married Charlotte Bacon, daughter of Lyman and Sarah Seaton Bacon of Syracuse and they had three children: Walter C, Charles F. and Mrs. J.P. Goettel.

Cause of death: abscess of the lungs
