Swifty was very proud of his military service during World War II. He was a tail gunner for the Army Air Corps Flying Tigers. He served in the Burma campaign and in the China theater on numerous bombing missions. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant and had received The American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He shared all of his war stories and songs with his children and grandchildren.
Swifty was a plumber in Ocean City for his entire life. He worked for various plumbers in Ocean City before starting his own business, later in life. The family business is still operated, as he taught, in the manner a responsible family business should be handled. He enjoyed being surrounded by his grandchildren on the Ocean City beach at the family gatherings on the 14th and 20th street beaches. He loved to dance with Mom at family weddings and was known to get up to the microphone and sing one himself.
Pop is survived by his wife of sixty years, Madeleine. He is also survived by his twelve children: Michael and his wife Kathy of Ocean City, , Andrew, Jr. and his wife Trish of Egg Harbor Twp., Madeleine McCusker and her husband Jim of Egg Harbor Twp., Vincent and his wife Marianne of Upper Township, Rick and his wife Karen of Tyler, Tx, Joseph and his wife Lissa of Absecon, Mark and his wife Reba of Brownington, VT, Tony of Upper Township, B.J. of Egg Harbor Twp., John and his wife Elaine of Tyler, TX, Mary Henry and her husband John of Madison, Wis, and David and his wife Kendra of Ocean City. He is also survived by his sister, Rose Bello of Ocean City, a brother, Michael of Ocean City, a sister, Anna Manni of Ocean City, and brother Paul of Upper Township. Pop-Pop is also survived by 41 wonderful grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, many Ocean City friends, and his church community at Praise Tabernacle in Egg Harbor Township.
Friends may call Monday Evening from seven until nine O'clock from The Godfrey Funeral Home of Palermo, 644 South Shore Road, Palermo, . A Funeral Service will be offered Tuesday morning at 11 O'clock from Praise Tabernacle, 2235 Ocean Heights Avenue, Egg Harbor Township, where friends may call from Nine O'clock until the time of Service. Burial will follow in Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House.
