Carol Livermont, 77, passed away quietly at her home on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Prior to her death she was greatly pleased to be able to enjoy being cared for by her children and their families as well as visits from her many friends. Grandkids came from near and far to say goodbye and let her know she was loved and would be missed dearly.
Carol Lee Brown was born in September 1934 in Nebraska and lived her childhood years in the Chadron and Crawford area. She was the youngest of three; her parents were Samuel and Edna Marie (Bailey) Brown. Carol's parents divorced and she lived with her father and his second wife Clara Marie, or Gramma Marie, as she was known.
While attending Chadron Prep, Carol, vivacious and outgoing, was a cheerleader, Student Council Vice President, and made the honor roll. She and her best friend, Helen, shared many memories, one of the most important of which was meeting fellow prep student Al Livermont and his friend Wayman Wild. Carol and Alan were married in July of 1952 following graduation from high school. Carol's first two children were born in Nebraska and moved with them to Pierre, South Dakota, and here they've been ever since. Four more children were born to them.
After raising six children for many years, Carol began to work outside the home. She waitressed at the Elks Club in the mid-1960's and then began work for the new Red Owl Store when it opened in the early 70s. She worked in many areas during her 35 years with the store, but her favorite was the fabric department. While in this area, she began quilting and sewing with sergers. She always had the best and newest fabrics with which to work.
After winning a SD Lottery prize, Carol was able to retire from work for health reasons. It was during this time that she and Al took up camping – in a $1400 camper that is still in the family. They eventually obtained a fifth wheel and enjoyed many family campouts as four of their kids and many grandkids and even great grandkids live in Pierre. Fourth of July's were always a special time as family that lived away would come home and enjoy camping and great fireworks with everyone else.
Carol also enjoyed traveling, even though she wasn't always able. She made trips to Yellowstone Park and also to Elvis' home in Memphis, TN, a gift from her children. Gramma Carol was a regular at ballgames, recitals and concerts for all her grand kids. Mom enjoyed crossword puzzles for many years until suduko took over her life! Just recently, she had a perfect suduko – written in marker with no changes. She also played bridge with a wonderful group of friends. A short while ago she said she'd had great cards that day, even if the girls did have to tell her what suit they were. As her eyesight continued to fade, mom began listening to books on tape and CD, and having her suduko puzzles enlarged and done under the magnifier. Mom even taught herself to play a keyboard and worked hard to learn the keys and notes. Mary Had a Little Lamb never sounded better.
