SIOUX CITY | L. Garland Everist, 96, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at a local care facility.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Garland was born on Jan. 10, 1916, in Sioux City, the son of Hubert H. and Julia (Green) Everist. Garland grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He then served in the U.S. Navy and was a pilot during World War II.

He married Margaret Ennenga in 1947. They had three children. He later married Elizabeth Lord in 1994. Garland was president of Western Contracting Corporation and oversaw the building of the Fort Randall Dam, Gavin's Point Dam and parts of Interstate 29.

Garland was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was active in the business community and served on numerous boards over the years.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth of Sioux City; three children, Margaret Ann Everist of Minneapolis, L. Garland Everist and his wife, Chris of Denver, Colo., and W. Michael Everist and his wife, Mary Alice of Tavernier, Fla.; four brothers, Hubert Everist of Dakota Dunes, Philip Everist of Sioux Falls, S.D., Richard Everist and his wife, Marian of Kansas City, Mo., and Daniel Everist of Sioux City; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Juliana Schust and Steve Everist
