James Mathis Culberson, born on May 14, 1921 was the son of the late Clifford H. Culberson and Eva M. Culberson. J. M. married Edna Stansell on January 15, 1950. He passed away on Monday, May 14, 2012, his 91st birthday. He was preceeded in death by his brothers Leon and Kenneth Culberson, a sister, Avanelle Culberson Lam, as well as his parents.

He graduated from Model High School and Darlington Preparatory School in Rome, Georgia. He was a baseball player as a young man, playing for the Brighton Textile league, in all positions except catcher. In 1942, J. M. chose to further his education at the University of North Carolina. He accepted a football scholarship to UNC instead of an offer to try out for the Atlanta Baseball Club. During his college career at UNC-Chapel Hill, he was honored to be chosen for the All-Southern Conference Freshman Football team.

Mr. Culberson served his country in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant and Rifleman Instructor. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Medal and American Service Medal. He served during World War Ii in the Asiatic Pacific region.

After his discharge from the Army in 1946, J. M. played a pre-season with his brother, Leon and the Red Sox. Mr. Culberson shared his love of football with others by spending 20 years as a football referee for the Georgia High School Association and managing the Brighton Pony League for five years. In addition to his athletic skills in football and baseball, he loved playing golf. Mr. Culberson was inducted into the Rome-Floyd County sports Hall of Fame in 1994.

J. M. was employed by Klopman Mills, Trend Mills, and Fairbanks before his retirement. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and friends.

A funeral service for Mr. Culberson was held on Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 at the Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Rev. Alvin Taylor officiating. Interment took place at Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens in Rome.
