Floy Mae Brumwell was born July 26, 1916, the daughter of William Henry (Harry) and Katie (Dobie) Brumwell at Sarles, ND. She graduated from Sarles High School and then attended Nursing School in Devils Lake, ND and worked as a nurse in the area whenever needed. On October, 16, 1937 Floy married the love of her life, Harry John Higgins, at the Catholic Church in Starkweather, ND. They made their home on the Higgins family farm west of Sarles where they were engaged in farming until the untimely death of Harry at the age of 45 from a heart attack. They were the proud parents of four children: Barbara Jean, Paul James, Daniel John and Michael Ray. After Harry's death in 1961, Floy held many jobs, including a cook at Border Central High School in Calvin, site manager of the Senior Meals program in Sarles and as a dental assistant at Turner Dental Office in Rolla. She was also very active in the Brumwell-Gary American Legion Auxiliary in Sarles, the Hansboro Catholic Church until it closed and then the Rock Lake Catholic Church. Floy also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary Post in Rock Lake.

Floy always had a large garden and spent many hours canning and was always busy baking or cooking something. She was a very good seamstress too but never seemed to find all the time she wished she had to do all the quilts and other sewing projects she wanted to do. Floy continued to make her home on the farm until 1993, at which time she moved to an apartment in Rock Lake. Floy eventually moved to Harlan & LaVonne Wagenman's Assisted Living place on their farm near Cando in 2002, then moving to Towner Country Living Center in Cando in 2006.

Survivors include her children, Barbara Schumacher of Mohawk, MI, Paul (Carla) Higgins of Devils Lake, ND, Dan (Debbie) Higgins of Rock Lake, ND and Mike (Debbie) Higgins of Roseau, MN; 11 grandchildren, Peter (Laurie) Schumacher of Warrenville, IL, Susan Schumacher of Calumet, MI; Paul John (Jennifer) Higgins of Chicago, Katie Kramer of Devils Lake, ND, Aimee (Andy) Gilbert of Garretson, SD, Jolien (Chuck) Schwan of West Fargo, ND, Randy (Tara) Higgins of Fargo, ND, Brent (Dana) Higgins of Ogallala, NE, Kristi (Jason) Dahl of Roseau, MN, Pam (Sean) Sherrod of Minneapolis, MN, and Todd (Elaina) Higgins of Baudette, MN; and 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Floy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harry; son-in-law David Schumacher; grandchildren Vicki Kay Higgins and David John Higgins; brothers: Howard (Stub), Walter, Malcolm, Billy (W.H.JR); and sisters Isabel, Grace, Alice and Beth. Floy was the last surviving sibling of her family.
