Walter was living in Fergus, MT when he enlisted and was a Light Weapons Infantryman with the 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division.

He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on July 28, 1950 and returned to duty on September 12, 1950.

He was seriously wounded again in North Korea on December 2, 1950 and returned on February 1, 1951.

He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on April 25, 1951.

Private First Class Ingalls was awarded the Purple Heart with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
