BIOGRAPHY: JOHN HOLTZCLAW & ELIZABETH HAVERHILL
John Holtsclaw Jr, was the first son of John, Sr. and his first wife, Elizabeth Haverhill. Elizabeth must have died early possibly at childbirth with John Jr.
John Jr was raised in Rockingham County, Virginia, and moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky, in 1810 at the age of twelve with his father, step-mother, Elizabeth Berry; half-brother, Jacob; half-sisters, Margaret (Peggy), Elizabeth, Mary (Polly), Sarah (Sally), and Nancy. It is presumed that the family moved in the vicinity of what is now called Holtzclaw Knob. There is also a brook called Holtzclaw Branch at the north side of Holtzclaw Knob running in a southeast-northwest direction.
All indications are that John Holtsclaw, Sr. and his family settled at the "Knob" when they moved to Pulaski County and all lived there till after Elizabeth Berry Holtsclaw died. John Jr., Jacob and other members of the family sold the land they owned and moved to Indiana in 1834. In 1828, John Jr was deeded for $300 cash, 75 acres by Lewis Morgan and his wife, Francis, and it is supposed that this Lewis and Francis were the father and mother of Anna Morgan, John Jr's first wife, since they named their first boy and girl Lewis and Francis. This same tract of land and all improvements were sold by John Jr. and his second wife, Anna Newell, in October, 1834, the same year they moved to Indiana. All these events make it most certain that the Holzclaw Knob area was the home and residence from the time they left Virginia and went to Kentucky.
