Roman was the third of four children born to Michael J. & Cecelia (Heinen) Braun.

Roman served in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting in January 1942 at Camp Grant, IL and eventually driving a tank at Anzio, Italy.

On 18 May 1947, Roman married Mary Louise Metcalf in Clinton, IA; they were both age 30. Born 7 July 1916 in Hawarden, IA; "Louise" (as she preferred to be called) was the second of four children born to Russell E. & Laura M. (Miller) Metcalf.

After the war, Roman used his GI Bill educational benefits to take college accounting classes and got his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in 1949.

He initially worked as a contracts/ finance specialist for Atomic Energy Commission (later U.S. Department of Energy) at the Savannah River Plant in Augusta, GA. Eventually he was appointed as Deputy Director of Finance for the U.S. Department of Energy. Roman & Louise built a home in Whispering Pines, NC and live there after he retired.

Roman died of heart failure on 21 August 2000 at home in bed in Whispering Pines, NC at age 83. His cremains were scattered from a row boat in a private family ceremony on Shadow Lake near their home – a location with special meaning to he and Louise.
