Born in Cork, he attended the Rush Medical College in Chicago, was a Surgeon in the Illinois Voluntary Infantry both Company H of the 97th and the 130th. during the Civil War. He was then a general practitioner of medicine in Jerseyville, Illinois for the remainder of his life. He had one son and three daughters: Edward Loftus Hope Barry, III; Sarah Theodocia Cheney; Daisy D Barry, and Norma Scott.
