Mr. James A. Elder, who had been a resident of Helt Township, this county, nearly all his life, and a resident of Dana since 1892, died on Tuesday afternoon of last week, April 20, 1901. The deceased was born in Brown County, OH, October 2, 1822, and emigrated with his parents to this county in 1832, when he was only 10 years of age. His father, Samuel Elder, was a native of Pennsylvania, and his mother, whose maiden name was Mary McCane, was born in old Ireland. His mother died in 1852, and his father in the summer of 1869, while on a visit to friends in New York.

James A. Elder, the subject of this notice, was reared on a farm and educated in the log cabin schools. He was successful in business and accumulated a fortune. He was married 4 times. The first time April 1, 1852 to Euphamia Sheely, who died the August following. His second wife was Mary Morgan to whom he married January 18, 1855, and who died November 10, 1862. The third time he was united in wedlock to Mrs. Julia A. Fisher, daughter of Richard Dicken, who died December 13, 1875. He was married a third time to Mrs. Susan R. Beach, who with his 2 children, survives him. The deceased served one term as commissioner of this county. In early life he identified himself with the Presbyterian Church, of which he was one of the pillars as long as he lived. His character was above reproach. His life was a living example of all that was noble. He was honored and respected by everyone. His funeral, which occurred at the Presbyterian Church on last Friday afternoon, was very largely attended. The discourse was preached by his pastor, Rev. Hooke, after which his remains were in the family cemetery on his old homestead.
