Shelby Man Victim of Accident

SHELBY—Robert Henry Cockrell, 63, died Sunday afternoon from injuries suffered earlier in the day when he was struck by a car on Shelby’s Front Street.

Authorities said he was hit by a car driven by Mrs. Mary Pettigrew, who told investigating officers she didn’t see the man as he was crossing the street.

Cockrell suffered a skull fracture, and a fractured pelvis. The accident happened at 9:15 a.m. The victim died three hours later in the Toole County Hospital.

No inquest was held.

Cockrell was born Oct. 28, 1898 in Corey, Idaho. He came to Montana in 1910 and homesteaded north of Galata. Later he moved to Libby and then to Whitefish before moving to Shelby in 1933. He served with the Seabees in World War II for 2 ½ years.

Surviving are a son, Robert, Shelby; a brother, William, Gig Harbor, Wash., and three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Johnson, Shelby; Mrs. William Simpson, Whitefish, and Stella West, Palouse, Wash.

Graveside services will be at 2 Tuesday afternoon and burial will be in the Veterans Plot at Mountain View Cemetery.

The death raises the highway traffic toll in Montana to 247.
