Charles and Eliza came west with an Independent Freight Company. Upon arriving in the Valley they settled in Morgan, Kaysville, and finally in Hoytsville where they bought a lot, for which he paid $150.00. He hauled coal to Salt Lake to pay for it. In the fall of 1868, the railroad was coming west and had reached Echo Canoyon. Charles secured work with them
He was always active in church and civic work until 1878 when something happened. He supported his family and others in the church, but he quit attending. He remained active in civic affairs, holding positions in the Summit County school district.
