During the Civil War, Isaac and his family lived in Spotsylvania Co., VA near Chancelorsvile and later Stafford Co. He served the Union Army as a civilian spy, reporting on Confederate troop movements in the area. Several of his original handwritten spy reports are on file at the National Archives, Washington DC. He was captured through a sting operation and sentenced to Salisbury Prison, NC. Luckily, the war ended immediately after his imprisonment and he was released and returned to his family in VA. His loyalities to the North, where he was born and raised, were mentioned in his obituary along with the fact that he was the oldest individual living in Stafford County at the time of his death.
