Isaac Silver was the son of James Silver and Rachel (Hutchinson) of New Jersey, where he was born. On 02 Jun 1857, he married (2) Catherine Orrock in Fredericksburg, VA. After extensive research, the name and circumstances of his first marriage are still unknown (Mar2012). The marriage record of Isaac and Catherine denotes that he was previously married.

During the Civil War, Isaac and his family lived in Spotsylvania Co., VA near Chancelorsvile and later Stafford Co. He served the Union Army as a civilian spy, reporting on Confederate troop movements in the area. Several of his original handwritten spy reports are on file at the National Archives, Washington DC. He was captured through a sting operation and sentenced to Salisbury Prison, NC. Luckily, the war ended immediately after his imprisonment and he was released and returned to his family in VA. His loyalities to the North, where he was born and raised, were mentioned in his obituary along with the fact that he was the oldest individual living in Stafford County at the time of his death.

The above bio information was provided by 2nd Great-Granddaughter, Karen Avery Miller.
