In Sept., 1902, he went to work for the fire department and retired Sept., 1936. When Baker went to work for the city fire department, there were only 6 fire stations, equipment was horse drawn and pumps were operated by steam.
He was assigned to Hook and Ladder #2 for many years until he was disabled after a ladder failure at a fire. He then worked at the Alarm Office and eventually became the Secretary of the FIre Department.
