Son of Walter Bowne Lawrence and Annie Townsend. Married (1) Herminia Barnes, daughter of William Barnes, at New York, NY, Sept 24, 1912. She died May 15, 1913. Married (2) Mrs. Caroline Lawrence Brown, widow of Francis Gordon Brown, Jr, and daughter of Henry L. Bogert, on June 10, 1915 at the Church of Heavenly Rest. He adopted her son, Gordon Brown.
Townsend Lawrence was a member of the Union, Knickerbocker, Harvard and Squadron A clubs, the St. Nicholas Society, Turf and Field Club. Member of the New York Stock Exchange. Willow Bank, his Flushing home, is one of the show places of that section of Long Island.

Enlisted, Jan. 15 1896, in Troop 2, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. Transfer, Nov. 21, 1896, to Troop 1, Squadron A Cavalry. Mustered-in with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry, May 20, 1898, at Camp Black, Hempstead, NY.

He was commissioned, 1st Lieutenant, 2nd US Volunteer Engineers, July 6, 1898, and assigned as an Aide to Major General Oswald H. Ernst. He participated in the Puerto Rico campaign, landing ashore at Ponce, PR, in August, and accompanied General Wilson's column to Coamo. August 14, 1898, the day after the Protocol, he went into the Spanish lines, under o flag of truce, being the first American to see the Spanish positions at Aibonito.

December 13, 1898, Major General Ernst was assigned as Inspector General of Cuba, Lieutenant Lawrence served with him in Cuba. He returned to the States in April of 1899 and resigned from volunteer service, May 26, 1899. Returned to Squadron A and was discharged, September 29, 1899.

He served in Squadron A with two of his relatives, Francis Draper Bowne, 1894-1904 1909-1914 and Thomas Nisbet lee, 1896=1898.
