Alger Driver Dies In Lima Accident

Lima has recorded the second traffic fatality of 1970 with the death of a 41-year-old Alger man Tuesday afternoon in St. Rita's Hospital. He had been injured in a "freak traffic accident" 15 hours earlier.

Leslie A. Gossard, 42, died at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday in the hospital's intensive care unit.

According to County Coroner Dr. William E. Noble, Gossard died of a ruptured bowel, apparently sustained when he was thrown into the car's steering wheel.

Gossard was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, police said. In the accident report, they listed a cut knee and contusions of the chest and forehead.

Officers said the auto was slightly damaged.

The accident occurred about 1:05 a.m. Tuesday in an alley just off the 100 block of East Second Street.

Gossard drove from the parking lot of Charlies Bar, in the southeast corner of Main and Second, police said and the auto continued across the street, hitting the side of a house at 115 E. 2nd, owned by Frank Barkley. The house sustained minor damage.

Police cited Gossard for failing to stop within an assured clear distance and driving without a license.

This was the city's second 1970 traffic fatality, while the county has five. The previous four deaths occurred in February, with none in January.

As of this date last year, 11 deaths had been recorded in the county, and two in the city.

Services for Mr. Gossard will be 2 p.m. Friday in Hanson Funeral Home, Rev. George Hurt officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Born Aug. 2, 1928, in Alger, he was the son of Alva and Bertha Archer Gossard. His father survives. He was married to Margaret Nichols, Sept. 2, 1969 and she also survives.

Other survivers are two sisters, Mrs. Robert Leightner of Compton, Calif., and Mrs. Melvin Conley of Rt. 2, Ada; and a brother, Warren of Kenton.

Friends may call after 7 tonight.
