Nimrod and Celia came to Callaway County in Missouri in 1837 and the three younger children were born in Callaway. They remained living on their farm in Nine Mile Prairie Township in Callaway County for the rest of their lives. Their neighbors there included branches of the Chapman and Peery families, members of whom are also buried in this cemetery on what was originally the Smith farm. The farm eventually came into the ownership of their daughter Sarah and her husband, James E. Chapman. The cemetery was originally called the Smith Cemetery, then was later was also called the Chapman-Smith Cemetery or Chapman Cemetery.
