Nancy Ann BRYANT was the daughter of William and SARAH BRYANT. Nancy's parents were born in Virginia but Nancy and two of her sisters were born in Tennessee. Nancy came to Monroe County Indiana sometime before she was five. Her family included her parents, her elderly grandparents and perhaps as many as four sisters.

Nancy married Nov 30 1841 to Winston BURCH, the son of Charles and Elizabeth SUTHERLAND BURCH. Winston was 26 and Nancy was 16. Winston and Nancy started a family. They would eventually have seven children, but the spacing between births leads me to believe that there might have been others who did not survive childhood.

In 1850, Winston farmed land in Monroe Co IN near Nancy's father's property. Sometime between 1857 and 1860 Winston and Nancy moved west to Henderson Co IL. Nancy's father, William BRYANT, who was then in his 70s, moved with her mother and two of her sisters to Henderson IL as well. In the 1860 census, William BRYANT's property is valued at $1500, while Winston's is valued at a modest $440.

Sometime between 1862 & 1866 Winston and Nancy moved further west to Nodaway County, MO. Nodaway County, MO and nearby Page Co, IA had been settlement destinations for some of Winston's Burch cousins so it's possible that Winston was influenced by family to select this area. It's also likely that Nancy's parents passed away in the early 1860s and that she and her sister inherited their property. Nancy's widowed sister Catherine Dobbins joined the Burch household.

By the 1870 Census the last of their seven children had been born. Their oldest, Provine, had died prematurely and their second, Josephine, married. The third daughter, Sarah, would marry in 1873. Winston continued to farm. Their property value had grown by 1870 to $1500.

In early 1880, Nancy's husband Winston died at the age of 65. Nancy is listed in the 1880 Census still living in Nodaway County with her sister Catherine Dobbins and her three youngest daughters. Nancy died herself in 1888 at the age of 65.

Winston and Nancy's seven known children:

Provine BURCH 1844 – 1862
Josephine FAKES 1849 – 1929
Sarah E COFFMAN 1852 – 1915
Ella Florence BURCH 1857 – 1929
Olive Martha HELM 1860 – 1941
Elmyriah BURCH 1862 – 1924
Louisa GRIFFITH 1866 – 1941
