Sarah Elizabeth (Hopkins) Bradford was the author of numerous books, including biographies of Columbus, Harriet Tubman* and Peter the Great. She also wrote children's books, magazine articles, poetry and a history and directory of Geneva, NY which was published in 1862. She was the great aunt of Samuel Hopkins Adams, another prolific author known for his Erie Canal stories.

After her husband's death in 1860, she opened a seminary for girls & young ladies in Geneva. Later she spent 8 years in Europe where she educated her daughters.
