In 1861, John Sullivan Addington joined the Confederate Army in the 2nd Georgia Regiment. He served through the war, being wounded several times. In his youth he married Miss Mary Jane Chastain, daughter of Col. E.W. Chastain, of Morganton. Of this marriage there were ten sons and one daughter, Georgia, who died at Bowling Green, Kentucky in her 14th year.
Several years after the death of his 1st wife, he married Mrs. Angie Couch, widow of Dr. Couch.
