During the Civil War, Charles served as a Lieutenant in the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 1861 to 1864 and fought at Stone River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge.
After the war, Charles served as a Washington County Commissioner where he was instrumental in obtaining a new courthouse.. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Mount Moriah Lodge. By 1900, he lived with his son Albert in Waterford Township.
