He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Ardennes, and Rhineland Campaigns. He was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Belgium Fourragère, and the Carbine Expert Badge. On 13 Oct 1945, he returned to the United States and arrived on 24 Oct 1945. On 2 Nov 1945, Sam (service #6 936 005) was honorably discharged as a Corporal at Fort Bliss, Texas and issued a lapel button (WD AGO Form 53-55).
Sam worked at Sandia Laboratories as a security police officer for 27 years.
