LEXINGTON - Services for Virgil Eugene Bailey, 85, will be held Sunday, October 15, 2006, at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews Road Church of Christ, 425 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC, with interment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Caughman Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Bailey died Friday morning at his home. Born August 13, 1921, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Richard Franklin Bailey and Lena Rigsby Bailey.

Mr. Bailey served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He received the American Theater Ribbon-APT Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal-WWII Victory Medal. He retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 35 years of service. Mr. Bailey's first love was the church that meets at St. Andrews Road Church of Christ. Always arriving at church an hour ahead of services, he greeted visitors and members with a welcoming smile and a firm handshake. He served as Deacon in charge of Benevolence for many years. Besides the church, home was Mr. Bailey's most favorite place in the world. He enjoyed hunting, fishing on Lake Murray, woodworking, banjo playing and old country music.

Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Elda Lowman Bailey; sons, Roger Bailey of West Columbia, Terry Bailey and his wife, Nancy, of Irmo; three granddaughters, Jennifer Argo and her husband, Casey, of Greenwood, Jessica Hatton of Opelike, Alabama, Ashley Taylor and her husband, Todd, of Chapin; sister, Lucy Lindler of Irmo; and brother, Larry Bailey and his wife, Nell of Columbia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy, and by brothers, Buford, Ben, Johnny, Tom, Claude, and Nevis Bailey; sisters, Margaret Barrett, Jessica Hiller, and Lola Looney; his granddaughter, Jessica's husband, Jackson Hatton, Jr.

During Mr. Bailey's long illness, the memories of kindness that have been shown through the years by the church family and friends are too numerous to count. The family expresses their deepest appreciation to Chari Birklid who has gone far beyond her role as a caregiver for Mr. Bailey. Without her help, Mr. Bailey would have not been able to remain in the home that he loved so dearly. The family also expresses their appreciation to Mr. Bailey's physician, Dr. Dale Hamrick, a very dedicated physician for his many kindnesses and care that he has provided through the years. A special thanks to the Lutheran Hospice staff, and the special care given by Ivy, Courtney, Tonya, and Loretta.
