Mr. Koon died Saturday, March 10, 2007, after a battle with cancer. Born in Irmo February 9, 1927, he was a son of the late Jimmie Lloyd and Minnie Weed Koon. He lived most of his life in the Dutch Fork-Lake Murray area.
In 1943, Mr. Koon left home and joined the US Navy to serve his country in WWII. He served aboard the Destroyer, the USS Melvin which saw action in most of the major battles in the South Pacific and was the only destroyer credited with sinking a Japanese battleship, the Fuso.
Returning home after the war, Mr. Koon and his brother started a very successful brick mason construction company. Many of the homes built in Columbia in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's were built by the Koon brothers.
Mr. Koon was an avid fisherman and hunter until the 1960's when he discovered golf. A charter member of Lexington Country Club, he was most proud of achieving four holes-in-one during his golfing career.
