Mrs Elizabeth Patton Brady, widow of John G Brady, Governor of Alaska from 1896 to 1906, and mother of Sheldon J Brady of Patterson, died Feb 6, 1951, at her home 67 Park Ave, New York City, in her 88th year. The deceased was a daughter of Hugh & Matilda Corey Patton and she was born July 26, 1863at Cochranton, Pa. She attended Maplewood Institute in Pittsfield, Mass, a seminary for women, where she studied teaching methods. Later she studied practical medicin under Col. Francis W Parker. Going to Alaska, she opened the first government day school for natives in Sitka in March, 1885, where she taught all ages of men, women & children. In 1887 she was married to Mr Brady, who had gone to Alaska in 1878 as the country's first Protestant minister after graduatingfrom Yale & Union Theological seminaries. Mr Brady remained in Alaska, then known as "Seward's Ice Box" to engage in business and manufacturing. In 1896, Mrs Brady urged her husband to seek the appointment from President McKinley as the first resident governor of Alaska. From 1916 to 1920, Mrs Brady was the agent for Indian Service. In recent years, she has made her home with her son Sheldon in Patterson. Surviving are three sons, John G & Hugh P Brady, both Seattle, Wash; Sheldon J Brady, Patterson; two daughters, the Misses Mary Beattie and Elizabeth P Brady of New York; sister Mrs Douglas Gray McTavish, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; three grandchildren, Mrs Edgar B Roesch, Centerport, LI; Mrs John Yurich, Switzerland; John G Brady III, Seattle, Wash; two great grandsons. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Brick Presbyterian Church, Park Ave, New York. Interment was made in the Pawling cemetery
