Melissa was born June 13, 1838, in Erie County, Ohio. Two months after her birth, her father died. Her mother moved back to her family home in Middletown, Maryland, taking Melissa with her. They lived with her great-grandfather for a few years. In 1840, her mother married David Schindler, who raised Melissa as his own. In 1856, when Melissa was just 17, her step-father died. A year later Melissa married Joel Brandenburg, probably in Middletown. Joel was a merchant, and Melissa was a milliner according to the 1870 census. She had a hat shop next to the Valley Register, Middletown's newspaper. In 1873 Joel and Melissa were living at 11 East Main Street in Middletown.
Joel died in Jan. 24, 1877. He and Melissa had no children. Two years later Melissa married Dr. John William Getzendanner. John was a widower. He had two children by his first wife, and one by his second. He and Melissa had no children of their union.
Soon after they married, they moved to Abeline, Kansas, where John worked as a physician. At the time of the 1880 census, John's two daughters were living with them, as well as two of John's nephews and his aunt.
By 1890, John and Melissa had moved back to Middletown where John operated a drugstore. John tore down the old structures sitting on the lot at 10 East Main St. and built a large house. Which is still standing.
Melissa died January 19, 1908. John died six years later. Melissa is buried in Middletown's Reformed Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Melissa Getzendanner, wife of Dr. Jon W. Getzendanner, died at her home in Middletown Sunday afternoon, January 19, after a long and painful illness from cancer of the breast, in the 70th year of her age. Mrs. Getzendanner was a daughter of Mrs Ann C. Schindler, of Middletown, and who is still living at the remarkable age of nearly 99 years. She was twice married, her first husband being the late Joel Brandenburg. Mrs. Getzendanner was an estimable and widely known lady. For very many years she conducted a millinery establishment in Middletown. After the death of her first husband she discontinued this business. She is survived by her husband and two step-children, Mrs. Leslie Hedges, east of Middletown, and Dr. Harvey Getzendanner, of Frederick. Also her aged mother and two stepsisters and one stepbrother, Mrs. Isaiah J. Toms and Miss Maggie Schindler, of Middletown, and Mr. Theodore O. M. Schindler, of Washington D. C. She was a member of the Reformer church. Her funeral took place from the house on Monday afternoon last, Rev J B Schontz officiating. Interment was made in the Reformed cemetery. The pallbearers were Drs. E. L. Beckley, G. Herbert Beckley, A. A. Lamar and Roy V. Hauver and Messrs. George O. Chamberlain and Geo. O. Huffer.
