Ed was suspended and later fired from the Portland Police department for beating Henry Albers into insensibility on February 23, 1902. Police Sergeant O.P. Church, City Jailer James H. Roberts and Patrolman Edward T. Caffee were suspended and later fired from the Portland Police Department for their parts in the riverfront fight which injured Mr. Albers and his brother Frank. They, with their brother Bernard, managed Albers Mills, the family business, and were prominent in Portland's German community. "The German-American vote would be a large one at the next city election, and it would be in one direction."
