J. W. Blanton dies from wound

Funeral services for John William Blanton, 52, who died Monday at 3:30 a.m. at General Hospital, will be conducted today at 4 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church.
The Cowpens Route 1 farmer-orchardist was found critically wounded the morning of Feb. 22 in a barn at his farm.
Police said he received a rifle would of the head and reported the wound apparently was self-inflicted.
A member of the family said at the time he believed Mr. Blanton's 22 calliber rifle accidentlly went off while he was climbing through or over a large gate.
Charles Buren Blanton, 49, a brother of Mr. Blanton, in January apparently took his own life county police reported. Police said he was found shot to death at his home.
John Blanton was a son of Mrs. Lula Pettit Blanton and the late Jack Blanton. He was a member of the School Distric 3 Board of Trustees and was a brother of Rep. Dewey Blanton of Chesnee.
Mr. Blanton was born and lived all of his live in the Mountain View Community on Cowpens Route 1. He was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church where he served as a decon and church treasurer. Mr. Blanton was a member of the Cowpens Masonic Lodge and was a 33-degree Mason. he was a member of Helaz Temple of Shrine in Greenville.
Surviving besides his mother and brother are a son, Dr. J. W. Blanton, Jr. of Chesnee; two other brothers, Belton W. of Cowpens and Webster Blanton of Gaffney Route 3; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Martin and Mrs. Julia Mullinax of Cowpens, Route 1 and Mrs. Olin Dalton of Auburndale, Fla. and one granddaughter.
The Revs. M. P. Boggs, C. B. Atkinson, B. C. Morgan and Vernon McAbee will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Troy and John Webber, Jack and Leon Mullinax, Jack R. Dalton, Harold Blanton, Hiley Pettit and Charles Mullinax. Deacons and former deacons of Mountain View Church will make up the honorary escort.
The body is at the M. W. Bobo Funeral Chapel and will be carried to the church today at noon.
