Grapeland (Houston County) Texas 75844 Thursday, March 31, 1966 Wife is Charged in Husband's Death Murder charges were filed Wednesday morning against Mrs. Myrtle Edens, 59, of Route 1, Elkhart, in the shooting death of her husband, Jim Hogg Edens, 63. According to Sheriff J. B. Lively, the shooting occurred shortly after 5 AM Wednesday. He said Deputy Sheriff George Cheatman in Grapeland received a phone call from Mrs. Edens about 5:20 AM saying she had shot her husband and was jumping into the water well at the residence. Sherrif Lively related that Cheatman called him and he instructed him to call an ambulance and proceed to the Edens farm, located in Houston County north west of Grapeland on the old Elkhart road. Cheatman called Hassell and Foster for an ambulance and the fire alarm was sounded for firemen to accompany them to recover Mrs. Edens from the well. Volunteer fireman assisted in removing Mrs. Edens from the well and she was returned to Community Memorial Hospital where she was placed in custody and under a 24 hour guard. Sheriff Lively stated that her husband was killed by two bullets fired from a .38 caliber pistol. He added that she would be carried before a judge or justice of peace for formal arraignment, exact time depending upon her condition. The sheriff also stated that two notes were left by Mrs. Edens, but contents were not disclosed
