Robert Wells was the son of Mose Wells and Mary Mason. On November 21, 1915, he married Lela Bennett, daughter of Joel B. Bennett and Neasy Jane Kelsey. Robert and Lela had four children:

At the age of 38 Robert was killed in an altercation with Buck Dillard.
