Massachusette native Colonel Brant was the son of Revolutionary patriot John Brant. He entered the army at the beginning of the War of 1812 with New York troops commanded by Captain H. W. Odell. He fought at Fort George, Forty Mile Creek and Lundy's Lane. He remained in the army after the war and advanced to the grade of lieutenant-colonel, taking part in the Indian War. From 1823 to 1829 he lived in St. Louis, and after leaving the army was the leading spirit in some of the largest building operations in St. Louis during the 1840s. His second wife was Sarah Benton, daughter of the brother of Thomas Hart Benton.
