"Zeno Gardner was one of the most entertaining men of his time. He had a great sense of humor and a real talent for telling stories to make everyone laugh. He would come visiting and everyone would sit around and listen; especially children, as he told about the Civil War. He was a confederate soldier. While on a furlough he went home with a Mr. [Robert] Bell to Hillsville, Virginia. Mr. Bell's wife had a new baby. About eighteen years later, Zeno went back and married Lou R. Bell, who was the baby he saw when he was on furlough. They had three daughters. Alice taught school and married Edd James, who is in Texas with a son. Zeno Gardner was born August 25, 1845, died January 25, 1925. It has been told that Ike Prince would pay Zeno's way to the old soldier's reunion just to enjoy the good times with him on the trip.

The Redden Cemetery [at Crow] was started about 1882. The land was donated by William ‘Billie' Redden. All the land around the first grave was woods at that time. Three soldiers buried in the Redden Cemetery are Zeno Gardner, A Civil War soldier, Lonnie Bennett of World War I, [and] Don Richmond of World War II. In this cemetery are five boys who were killed during work at timbering. Undertakers were not around that section of the country, and there wasn't any way to send their bodies back to their homes. Their names were Ike Whorley [Worley?], Harden Dehart, Pink Dehart, Jack Lemon, and Jack Ellson [Ellison?]. A log at the mill rolled over Harden Dehart. The late Onie Whorley Dean saw this accident from her house. There were no names at their graves and a few years ago. Mrs. Ida Vogt gave Buel Redden the names and he made little cement markers with their names on them."
