Smith, Jack 91, passed away peacefully the evening of July 8, 2012. Born in Lossiemouth, Scotland, Jack and his family came to the United States when he was 8 years old. He graduated from Waukegan Township High School and spent his entire career working at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago. He served ABT faithfully as a Department Manager and Time Study Engineer for the better part of 38 years. Upon retiring at age 55, Jack enjoyed golfing often at his second Waukegan home, Bonnie Brook Golf Course. At Bonnie Brook, Jack was instrumental in the creation of "the pond" on hole 3. Jack developed real estate in multiple Waukegan subdivisions with specific work in Heather Heights, where he named a street after his daughter, Jacquelyn, his proudest creation. He also spent years serving the Waukegan community as City Official, City Treasurer, Alderman, Park Board Member and Port Authority Official. He was honored to represent Waukegan in Washington DC for the birth of the Waukegan Port Authority. Jack's most prideful contribution was the Lake County Crippled Children's Clinic where he was President for 35 years. The Crippled Children's Clinic was founded at a time when there was no orthopedic treatment available in Lake County. Jack recently said "we got a doctor from the Shriner's Hospital of Chicago to meet us at the Masonic Temple on Sheridan Road in Waukegan to help the kids, and we just kept doing it." Later, Jack spearheaded the purchase of a Swiss produced Lokomat Machine and donated it as a BIG "thank you" to The Shriner's Hospital. The Lokomat gives paralyzed children a chance to regain mobility as a driven robotic gait orthosis guides the patients' legs on a treadmill. Jack was deservedly honored by Shriner's Hospital representatives. Former Chicago White Sox great, Billy Pierce, was on hand to honor Jack for this great donation. To Jack, a lifelong White Sox fan, this was certainly a thrill. Jack was a Mason of the Scottish Rite and Shriner, he is survived by: Daughter Jacquelyn Couvall and son in-law George Couvall; Grandson George J. Couvall (Jenny) and great-grandsons Georgie and Billy; sister Jean Soderquist and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him are his parents, James and Margaret Smith; sister, Ishbel Rogers; in-laws, Frank and Anne Kuzmickus; and the love of his life, Virginia, his beloved wife. Many dear friends that preceded him are sure to be his "welcoming committee." Jack Smith was a proud and loving family man with a single lifelong priority... Always give back.
