John Champness Watson was born about 1836 in Virginia. His family migrated to Tennessee and then to Freestone Co., TX arriving there in 1850. John graduated from Baylor University at Independence, TX in 1861. John C. Watson never married. He served as a Lieutenant in Co. D, 10 Texas Infantry CSA. He died in the Battle of Pleasant Hill. According to his brother, Charles Louis Watson, he was "buried near Mr. Lanier's gate." His sword, which his brother brought home belongs to descendants of his brother Alexander Tazewell Watson.
