Alton Tate Vanzandt, 88, of the Hopewell community died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at his residence.

Mr. Vanzandt was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Blount County to Thomas and Pluma Hyatt Vanzandt. He was married to the former Virginia Millwood for 31 years.

He was a coal miner, heavy equipment operator and was a resident of Hopewell for the past 20 years. He enjoyed hunting and raising game chickens.

He is survived by his wife: Virginia Vanzandt of Hopewell; seven daughters and sons-in-law: Loretta Weaver of Blountsville, Peggy Bryan of Fairview, Betty Melson of Blountsville, Willow Dean Maddox of Blountsville, Gay and Ricky Townsend of Arab, Debbie Brooks of Arab and Diane and Tony Hoosier of Blountsville; son: Danny Vanzandt of Athens; three stepsons and daughters-in-law: Terry and Mary Martin of Rainsville, Ricky Martin of Vinemont and Jimbo and Cindy Martin of Georgia; stepdaughter: Paula Peacher of Georgia; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons: Lester Vanzandt and David Vanzandt; stepson: Randy Martin; a grandson, a great-grandson, a great -stepgranddaughter, two brothers and a sister.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, May 12, 2012, at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel with Herbert NeSmith officiating. Burial will be in New Lebanon Cemetery in Blount County with Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel directing.
