"Grandma Provence" [sic]

Mrs. Elvira R. "Grandma" Provence [sic], who leaves 102 living descendants, died yesterday afternoon following a long illness at her home in Elk Creek. She was a pioneer Glenn county resident, having lived here for 60 years.
She would have been 90 years old Oct. 13.
A native of Monroe county, Ohio, Mrs. Provence [sic] was married there in 1867 to the late Nathan Provence [sic], moved with him to Kansas two years later, and came by ox team to California in 1876.
The couple had 14 children, of whom nine survive:
Harvey, Elk Creek; Porter, Sunnyvale; Albert, Orland; Ben, Elk Creek; and Oscar, Ord; Mrs. Kate Smith, Paradise; Mrs. Linda Reppert, Lodi; Mrs. Etta Dixon, Elk Creek; and Mrs. Fern Woodridge, San Francisco.
A sister, 86, lives in Kansas. She had planned to visit Mrs. Provence [sic] this month, but a severe fall breaking her hip, postponed the trip.
The body is at the Sweet Funeral Home, but will be taken to Elk Creek for services at the Christian church there tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. H. S. Saxby officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek cemetery.
Mrs. Provence [sic] was a lifelong member of the Christian church and also was active in the Grange
Mrs. Provence had taken two Airplane [sic] rides in her lifetime, and was so thrilled by the experience that she had tried to prevail upon relatives to let her go by air to her old home in Kansas.
Her husband died in 1917. – Transcribed by E.
