Kenneth Willard Mitchell, 73, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, October 20, 1999. He was born April 23, 1926 in Pulaski, the son of the late Wilmer and Ardath Bandy Mitchell. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U. S. Navy. Mr. Mitchell retired from Roanoke Times & World News in 1983, after 28 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Lena Quesenberry Mitchell; his son, Kenneth Mitchell, Jr., of Baltimore, Md.; his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jeffrey Purdy of Philadelphia, Penn.; two granddaughters, Laura and Adrienne Purdy; two brothers, Russell Mitchell of Pulaski, Ralph Mitchell of Floyd; two sisters, Evelyn Gibbs and Nancy Roop, both of Pulaski. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 23, 1999 from Oakey's North Chapel, with Eloise Q. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park with full military honors by VFW Post 1264. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's North Chapel.
