In 1861 service of 6th Iowa Infantry included deployment to LaMine Bridge on railroad guard duty and garrison duty at Tipton, Syracuse and Springfield, Missouri.
In 1862, the 6th was engaged at Battle of Shiloh (Apr 6-7). The 6th Iowa held their advanced position on Apr 6 with tenacity giving Buell time to bring in reinforcements at Pittsburg Landing snatching victory from defeat.
