Charles William Semstead was one of six children born to Norwegian immigrants, Nils and Rachel Olson Semstead.

Charles started a life-long career in construction at an early age. He was a World War I veteran in the U.S. Army, serving in the 54th Artillery Regiment, C.A.C.

Charles was first married to Lea Dodson, daughter of George and Sallie Turpin Dodson of the Dodson community in Kansas City, Missouri. They were married on July 21, 1920 in Kansas City. Lea was diagnosed with tuberculosis and died in October 1921 at the age of 23.

Charles next married Mabel Marie Nelson Eib. Charles and Mabel did not have any children; however, Mabel had two young children from a previous marriage.

Charles' last marriage was to Freda E. Butcher, a native of Osawatomie, Kansas. At the time of their marriage Freda was a resident of New Orleans. They were married in Biloxi on September 18, 1941. Friends and relatives of the couple held a wedding supper at the then new Broadwater Beach Hotel in Biloxi, which was one of the finest Art Deco hotels of its time.

Freda died on Sunday, June 29, 1969 in the Memorial Hospital in Gulfport where she had been a patient for 21 hours. Charles was admitted Monday in the Biloxi Veterans' Facility Hospital where he died Tuesday, July 1. Charles and Freda would have celebrated their 28th anniversary that September.

In addition to Freda, Charles was predeceased by his parents and all of his sisters and brother: Dana G. Munkers, Edna Elaine Munkers, Mary Irene Carr, Ruth Engelman and Thomas, all of Kansas City, Missouri.

A double funeral service was held for Charles, 72, and Freda, 76, on July 2, 1969. The graveside service in Greenwood Cemetery was officiated by Rev. Aufderstrasser, pastor of Immanual Lutheran Church.
