Dorothy Ann Smith, age 84 of North Platte , passed away May 11, 2012 at her home. Dorothy was born June 10, 1927 to Gus and Jennie (Kennedy) Nelson in Overton, NE. She was raised in Paxton and graduated from North Platte High School .
Dorothy met Merle C. Smith at the bakery in North Platte where they both worked. They were married on January 1, 1946 in Kansas . Other than a short period of time when they lived in Crete, NE, Dorothy and Merle lived in North Platte where she worked for Sunmart for many years.
Dorothy was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was a full time minister for over 40 years and she was a volunteer for the building of Kingdom Halls and worked in the Cookie Shack for many years. She embroidered hundreds of pillow cases to give to family and friends. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, never saying an ill word about anything or anybody. She was always loving and she gave of herself to everyone. Her husband Merle and family were the center of her life.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Merle of North Platte; 4 children Cheryl Keller of North Platte, Kim (Judy) Smith of Kearney, NE, Kyle (Jennifer) Smith of North Platte, Kelly (Ed) Oberton of Grand Rapids, MN; 13 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; sister Mary Baumgartner of North Platte; numerous other family members and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; 2 children Linda and Kevin; 3 brothers; 2 sisters.
Inurnment will be at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery . Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
