What would it take to convince the descendants of two of Decatur's founding fathers to gather at the Decatur Museum?
The Decatur Museum Board members had an idea.
They decided to throw a party, a birthday party, in honor of the 200th birthdays of The Rev. "Father" William Hamilton and Abiel Gardner "Garner" Maryott, who were both leading figures in the settlement and development of Decatur, and invite their descendants.
On Saturday, Aug. 20, the day of the celebration, the museum was filled to capacity with standing room only as members of both families converged at Decatur Museum to honor their ancestors with family history readings, birthday cake, photo opportunities, and a social time where family members could reminisce and share family stories.
"I enjoyed the party," said historic committee president Jane Judt. "It was exciting and gratifying to see these families connect with each other. Some of the Hamilton family had never met their cousins and brought stories to share with each other and with us. The Maryott family, too, learned about their common ancestor. The program demonstrated the museum's mission of preserving history."
During the program, Larry Murphy read a history of each family that covered when they lived in or around Decatur, contributions they made to the community in its early stages of development, and interesting personal stories. He also asked each family member in attendance to introduce themselves and give a brief description of their family lineage.
