Primitive Messenger, p. 816 (publication of Primitive Baptist Church)
JOHN POLAND
Our beloved and highly esteemed brother John Poland, was a member of our church, and a deacon. He was sound in the faith, had no compromise to make with error, and contended earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints. He was born in Ohio, but moved to Indiana and thence to Illinois. He became a member of the Old School Baptist church called Bethel, in Hancock county, Ills., in April, 1853. He was in his seventy-fifth year. He came to my house the first day of October, 1886, to go with me to meeting the next day; and went to bed as well as common, and in good spirits. The next morning he was dead in bed. He will awake in the likeness of Jesus when he comes the second time without sin unto salvation. The unworthy writer tried to preach to a very large concourse of people. B. R. Warren. Note: Elder Bushrod R. Warren, author of this obituary, was the husband of his sister-in-law Delilah Symmonds.
