CRASH KILLS EMMETT GUTHRIE
Emmett R. Guthrie, 78, prominent Coshocton County educator and legislator, died at 10:05 p.m. Monday at Coshocton Memorial Hospital, the result of severe head injuries suffered in a two-car collision at 9:15 p.m.

Guthrie, Coshocton Route 2, and James W. Masters, 21, 115 W. Chestnut St, a passenger in the second auto, became the County's fourth and fifth traffic fatalities of 1970.

Sheriff's deputies reported that Guthrie made a left turn onto Ohio 16 at the entrance of Spitler's Restaurant, .5 mile southwest of Coshocton, into the path of an oncoming auto driven by Keith E. Stiteler, 21, Coshocton Route 3.

Stiteler was injured and taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released. There was total damage to both vehicles.

Deputies cited Stiteler for driving while intoxicated.

Guthrie was born July 7, 1892 at Nellie, a son of Warren [Orron] and Jane Hughes Guthrie. He was a principal of Coshocton High School for 1923 to 1927.

He was a state representative from Coshocton County from 1927 to 1930, a state senator 1949 – 1950, and an employee of the state tax commission for 10 years.

Guthrie attended the Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Elks, Masons, the Wakatomika Chapter OES, American Legion, VFW Post 2040, Ohio State Grange and the Hampshire Breeder's Association.

He was a graduate of Ohio Northern University, attended graduate school at the University of Chicago, and was a principal of Heneritta High School at Castalia from 1920 to 1921.

He was a former Coshocton City Service director and a Navy Veteran of World War I.

Guthrie was preceded in death by two wives, Jesse Conrad and Hazel Foster. Surviving are one son, Randall Guthrie, Sr. Department of Defense, Columbus; one grandson, Randall Guthrie, Jr. and one granddaughter, Rhonda Guthrie; two brothers, John of Coshocton and Ray of Frazeysburg. Also two sisters, Mrs. Lila Johnston, Bradenton, Fla. and Mrs. Elmer Funk, Coshocton.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Emmett was one of the seven students to graduate from West Bedford High School in 1911. He was the class president. Emmett's graduation oration was titled "The World A Stage".
